Five Fashionable Buys for Japan Relief
Posted on Tue, Mar 22, 2011
Few things in this world get my heart racing as much as breathtaking fashion. To-die-for couture collections, perfectly put together designer pieces, and the amazing air of confidence that only the perfect outfit can ensue- these are a few of the many reasons why I truly have a passion for fashion. I cannot help but get lost in my admiration and appreciation for the lines created by world renowned designers, later to be drooled over by everyone from budding-fashionista window shoppers to seasoned couture connoisseurs and regulars in the fashion industry alike. Although my love for fashion is undeniable, it is on days like March 11, when the lives of over 9,000 Japanese residents were taken due to the earthquake and tsunami, that I simply cannot turn my thoughts to the latest trends or designs, and it becomes clear to me that across the world there are far more important concerns than clothing.
The Red Cross was the first organization supplying ways for Americans to immediately aid Japan. The day after the quake, I was aware that by texting REDCROSS to 90999 you could donate $10, and many celebrities (including Nicky Hilton) endorsed this instant donation method. Much to my pleasant surprise, the fashion industry also quickly jumped on board in the relief efforts of this tragedy. While doing my usual daily fashion browsing online, I instantly found many designer (and less-heard-of) brands that were offering trendy and trouble-free ways to assist in the relief. Bergdorf Goodman made its facebook page a “Charity Navigator” linking to the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, and the Shelter Box. David Yurman and Gucci also used their social networking sites to urge fans to donate, and Coach announced on its facebook that it made a $5 million to the Japanese Red Cross Society.
It is times like these that perhaps I appreciate fashion even more; when I can see that the world’s obsession with clothing is not solely materialistic or status-driven, but instead a common fascination for fashion that can be utilized in a wonderful and globally-conscious effort. With Japan being home of the Harajuku phenomenon as well as one of world’s fashion capitols (which sadly just announced its cancellation of Japanese Fashion Week due to the aftermath), I cannot think of a more appropriate method of charity for this amazing country in need. Here are our five favorite (and most fashionable) items that donate directly to Japanese relief.
