Modern Man’s Essentials List- 5 Items Under $200

Posted on Tue, Feb 01, 2011

Finally…a blog for your man (or you, you masculine & fashion forward male web surfer, you). Although often neglected on most style sites (and admittingly, even on our own blog) men’s style is one of the most intriguing and under-appreciated sectors in the world of fashion.Outside from a page or two in GQ or Esquire, most men don’t admit to intentional exposure to style advice or proclaimed trends. Most men find their style on the street, or on their favorite athlete or music artist, and seem to come about their own wardrobe choice strictly through observation. But the fact of the matter is, men care a lot more about fashion than they lead on. In this day and age, looking both good & groomed is just as important for men as it is for women. With the conclusion of Men’s Fashion Week earlier this month and this new focus on men’s style, it is our pleasure also to spotlight the oh-so-overlooked other sex. Here are 5 wardrobe essentials under $200 that every man needs this season.

1. A Stylish Watch That Goes With Anything

Function & fashion, choose a watch that expresses your personality & taste, but is chic enough to be worn with a business suit if necessary. Oh & remember men, watches should be worn securely around your wrist…not like a bracelet. We suggest this Kenneth Cole New York “KC-Touch” Black-Strap Watch. Dillards, $150.

2. A Blazer You Could Live In

At least one comfy yet fashionable blazer is essential to any man’s closet. Choose a sport coat or a double breasted blazer if you’re a dressier guy, or if your more casual, try one like this Shades of Grey Three Button Wool Blazer. Casual & comfy, yet adds a bit of style to an otherwise dull outfit. Bloomingdales, $120

3. An Alternative to Sweats; The Relaxed Jean

Who says you can’t be comfy and stylish all at once? Trade in your sweats or basketball shorts boys, because their are some seriously stylish & comfortable relaxed jeans that feel just as great as the aforementioned. Our pick? BOSS Black ‘Jackson’ Relaxed Straight Leg Jean in the Dark Dirty Used Wash. Dress them up or down, but still feel like you’re lounging. Nordstrom, $135

Kenneth Cole Reaction Mens Boots

4. A Sweet Pair of Kicks

Whether you’re a combat boot or Nike kind of guy, having at least one or two fancy pairs of shoes that represent your personal style is key. Shoes are generally the trademark piece to a man’s look, so choose wisely. If you’re laidback look no farther than Jeremy Scott (his winged Adidas’ even have us women wanting a pair). Or if you’re the rugged type, check out these Kenneth Cole Reaction ‘Night Hunt’ boots. Bluefly.com, $89.

5. Your Go-To Button Up Brand

A button up shirt is all it takes to switch from day to night for a man. Find a brand you like that also fits (so that the sleeves are secure when rolled) and buy a few in different designs (pinstripe, solid color, checkered, whatever your flavor). This Joe’s Jeans ‘Relax’ Roll Sleeve Shirt is a perfect pick. Nordstrom, $99.
